Season 2011 in the books

Well kittens, the 2011 season wrapped up on November 30th.  Though truly not over is one wants to hunt the 100 and 200 zones along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, those run until December twentieth.  Mrs and Lil’ LO got out on monday for one last crack at the moose.  It was a hard day of hunting after all the rain on Sunday afternoon – some super crunchy conditions.  Mr LO took to the treestand one last time for 2011 ’cause you just never know what could happen.  A few centimeters of fresh snow blanketed the countryside on Wednesday morning which put a slight hush to the crunchy snow conditions.  As Mr LO was headin’ to the stand he cut across a fresh set whitey tracks going across the pasture he’s gotta cross but not too much around the stand since the snow had quite.

During the three hours in the stand a small white-tail and a cow and calf moose cruised by.  Mr LO headed south towards the Anselmo corner to collect a trail cam and take a short walk around the chunk of bush where the camera was.  There was a few fresh tracks since the snow stopped and Mr LO did run into one white-tail but could get a decent look to tell whether it was a buck or doe.  Mr LO figured he might as well finish off the last couple hours in a different treestand at Adams Corner.  It was a pretty exciting evening sit as Mr LO called in another small 4X4 white-tail and twenty minutes later spotted another one skulking by at about 75 meters.

Mr LO tried to coax him in for a good look with the ol’ true-talker call but he was distracted by something else.  To make the long story short that buck got into it with another one and the fight was one.  Mr LO hurried outta the stand to see it he could get close enough for a look but light was running at a premium.  The scrappy bucks made quite a racket and in the end Mr LO wasn’t able to pin down antler size as they were running back and forth across the cutline and the light disappeared.   There were some high hopes for the LOC but the Crew came to the realization that it might be a tough year with the lack of game animal sightings.  The deer took a beating over the winter last year and it showed.  As they say, “there’s always next year”.
